“VeePee what?” somebody asked at the camping site a couple of weeks ago. “I thought you where starting as independent consultant,” another person asked on Linkedin. These are valid questions considering that, before joining XebiaLabs, I was, indeed, ambitious to become an independent consultant and I had planned to start a new assignment in that role. So, it makes sense that my friends and colleagues would be totally surprised that, when XebiaLabs asked me to become their new VP of Product Development, I jumped at the chance.

But there are some really good reasons why I decided to work for XebiaLabs. Here are the top 6.

1. Xebialabs creates products that have a huge positive impact on their customers

I’m very motivated by what is possible. I love showing people what they can achieve within their organizations and helping them improve their systems so they can reach their goals. I intended to do this as a coach, team by team and company by company. However, by guiding the XebiaLabs development team to continually improve our products—XL Release and XL Deploy—I can still do this work but with a much larger impact. In my role at XebiaLabs, I’ll not only have an immediate, positive imact on the development team, but on all our customers throughout the world.

2. As VP Product Development I can be entrepreneurial

One reason that becoming an independent consultant appealed to me was that it offered entrepreneurial opportunities, especially as compared to working for a large organization. At XebiaLabs, I have a lot of responsibilities but also a lot of freedom in how to get things done. With around 120 colleagues, the company is small enough to be entrepreneurial but big enough to have a strong foundation to build upon.

3. Great company vibe

Combine a good vision, a clear purpose and great engineers and you get an excellent culture that’s creative, productive, and fun. This describes XebiaLabs. All this, along with nice coffee and good laptop and the right tools, makes XebiaLabs a great place to work.

4. Working for a front runner in the market offers an excellent environment for learning

I love to follow developments in the DevOps market and understand how IT is rapidly changing and accelerating. Working for Xebialabs provides an excellent opportunity to keep up with market trends as they apply to our own products and those from other companies.

5. My experience and coaching skills can help the development teams at Xebialabs

Despite the fact that I’m very positive, I realize that XebiaLabs is not heaven on earth. That’s why I love working for this company. With a little bit of coaching, our development teams can continuously improve, and people can strive every day to grow their knowledge and skills. I’m happy for the opportunity to put my coaching skills and experience to work for the good of my teams.

6. International, outgoing, startup

I like to travel because it lets me meet other people and experience other cultures. I also love to write, speak, and to be part of a flourishing company. These are the ingredients that put a smile on my face and a twinkle in my eyes.

Weet jij wat de (IT) strategie van je bedrijf is? Wat merk je van de realisatie hiervan op de plek waar je werkt? Explorer Maps zijn het instrument dat we sinds driekwart jaar gebruiken om de theoretische strategie daadwerkelijk uit te voeren.

Je herkent de worsteling misschien wel die ik ook zie bij leiderschapsteams om de strategie daadwerkelijk uit te voeren. Er zijn zoveel andere zaken die de aandacht vragen dat de uitvoering van de grootse plannen er nog wel eens bij in schiet.

Wij zijn trots op hoe het ons steeds beter lukt om de strategie met onze Explorer Maps tot leven te laten komen. Al het materiaal is Open Source beschikbaar en delen we graag met je.

Het concept van de Explorer Maps

Explorer Maps zijn in essentie heel eenvoudig. Het gaat er vanuit dat je een duidelijke visie hebt en nog niet exact weet hoe je die zou moeten realiseren. Is dit niet het geval bij bijna elke strategie als je heel eerlijk bent? Je hebt een Big Goal die verder in de tijd staat. Om hier te komen gaan we ontdekken welke Actions we moeten uitvoeren. Onderweg kom je Next Goals tegen dit zijn doelen die je behaalt op weg naar de Big Goal.

Door kleine acties en volgende doelen te definiëren ontdek je stap voor stap wat nodig om bij het grote doel uit te komen. Het gaat er vanuit dat we niet alle kennis hebben om te bepalen hoe we ons doel behalen. We hebben te maken met een “knowledge threshold“. En dat vindt ik een geweldig principe.

Laten we eerlijk zijn naar elkaar, een strategie is gaaf op papier maar als je niet in staat bent deze te realiseren is het weggegooid geld.

Tegelijkertijd is dit zeker niet het excuus om maar wat aan te modderen. Het gebruik van de Explorer Maps vraagt om enorme discipline. Elk kwartaal kijken we terug op wat gerealiseerd is en wat niet en daaruit plannen we nieuwe Goals en Actions. Elke week opnieuw voer je nieuwe acties uit om zo de strategie tot leven te laten komen.

In het hele denkproces breng je ook in kaart wat de obstacles zijn die je tegenhouden om acties uit te voeren of doelen te bereiken. Deze kun je stoïcijns negeren en doen alsof ze er niet zijn maar dat brengt je niet verder. Je kunt ze beter als eerste aanpakken en oplossen.

In de uitvoering kun je met een marker “Today” aangeven waar je in het proces van uitvoering bent. Je ziet daarbij soms pijnlijk hoe moeilijk het is om de strategie daadwerkelijk tot leven te laten komen.

5 Aspecten waar een Explorer Map zijn toegevoegde waarde heeft

• Actions en Next Goals helpen je om grote strategische doelen naar concrete, kleine stappen te vertalen. Het helpt je om wekelijks nieuwe stapjes te zetten.
• Je strategie en de executie hiervan is visueel geworden. De strategie hangt in je kamer (zie mijn Obeya post) en de uitvoering er van kun je eenvoudig bijhouden in dezelfde map.
• Het is een prachtig instrument om de teams door de strategie te praten en ook daadwerkelijk tot leven te laten komen voor ze.
• Als team oefen je kwartaal na kwartaal in het nog beter concretiseren van de plannen die je hebt. Je bouwt een “feedback loop” in op je strategie zoals teams dat hebben met een retrospective. Daarmee zijn we ook steeds beter in staat om de transformatie te leiden en te bepalen wat we moeten doen om te verbeteren.
• Het feit dat het in je kamer hangt dwingt je week in week uit om het over je strategie te hebben. Open en eerlijke gesprekken leggen soms pijnlijk bloot waar nu daadwerkelijk de knelpunten zitten. Met een team dat elkaar echt vertrouwd is dit een geweldige ervaring om samen te groeien.
